Day of Action for Grassy Narrows
and Indigenous Self-Determination Jan. 30
The five year Grassy Narrows Indigenous logging blockade has become a critical focal point in the fight for social justice and ecological sanity.
In January 2007, the Grassy Narrows First Nation called for a complete moratorium on all industrial activity on their traditional territory without community consent in order to protect their land and culture from further destruction. But companies like Grand and Toy and Office Max continue to sell paper made from trees clear-cut on Grassy Narrows territory.
Grassy Narrows and RAN are calling an International Day of Action on January 30h to call on Grand and Toy and Office Max to publicly support the moratorium, and stop selling paper made from Grassy Narrows’ forests without consent.
Go to FreeGrassy.org for updates, background, contacts, dowloadable flyers and other materials. Please let us know if you are planning an action so we can add you to the map and send interested activists your way (contact asartor@ran.org).
Under intense pressure from Grassy Narrows and international solidarity campaigns the provincial government of Ontario has recently appointed a high-level negotiator to address core issues in Grassy Narrows. Grassy Narrows has made clear that respect for the moratorium is a top priority and have asked supporters to help turn up the heat.
NOW is the time to make sure that corporations driving the destruction in Grassy Narrows feel the MOST pressure to ensure that Grassy Narrows demands are met. .
On January 30th please join Grassy Narrows, RAN and activists across the United States and Canada to send a strong message to OfficeMax and Grand & Toy – Support the moratorium in Grassy Narrows!
